Job Description
The Director of IEA oversees all aspects of the operations of the institute including leadership in planning, setting priorities, and program development.
The IEA facilitates an extensive and well-known visiting artist technological residency program and projects that are funded through an endowment and a long history of grants. The IEA is a high-technology-research studio facility within the School of Art and Design, New York State College of Ceramics, at Alfred University, New York. IEA encourages and supports projects that involve interactive multi-media systems, experimental sonic/video production, digital imaging, print media explorations and growing publications.

The position is open until filled. Expected start date: July 1, 2024.

Salary:$70,000-$73,000


Essential Functions:
  • This position has supervisor authority
  • Manage IEA's Experimental Project Residency Programs (EPR), supported by NYSCA and NEA, sponsors approximately 24 artists a year
  • Leadership in writing, submitting, implementing, and reporting for all grants through Alfred University's office of Sponsored Programs
  • Maintain and advance IEA's integrated sound, video, and print media studios
  • Supervise staff that assist the director in the residency programs regarding scheduling artists, travel, and contracts
  • Maintain ongoing relationships and partnerships with art organizations of Western New York and be active in engaging the greater community. Continue and expand international relationships and linkages
  • The Director will have the opportunity to teach one course per semester in the School of Art and Design and may be assigned service to the division, school, and university as appropriate
Other Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Supports and assists in creating intersections for faculty, staff and students that will assist in transforming people's lives
  • Supports and assists in creating an evolving culture of mentoring and rich engagement opportunities for faculty, staff, and students
  • Maintains a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and a high degree of cultural competence and respect for a wide range of identities and experiences, therefore welcoming and supporting all faculty, staff and students and expanding access to the AU experience
  • Maintains a safe working environment within and around their facilities and associated equipment and supplies including, but not limited to, obtaining Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information pertaining to any hazards associated with their work environment
  • Participates in all required assigned training, including safety training and will comply with safety rules, regulations, and protocols
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Contributes to the overall success of the University by performing other duties as assigned
Qualifications-Education & Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Terminal degree in art and/or design or related or professional experience equivalent
  • Ability to travel (national & international)
  • Experience of working in arts organizations with demonstrated ability in successful grant writing and management
  • A history of interdisciplinary program development
  • Experience with strategic planning, budget, facilities, and personnel
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and lead an innovative community-based arts organization
  • Experience with or a deep understanding of digital media in both time-based and print media forms and their histories
  • Demonstrated personnel management

Personal Protective Equipment must be worn when required. A respiratory function test and the ability to use respirators may be required. Stairs and uneven surfaces may be present; artificial lifts, etc. may or may not be available. The position may require the incumbent to walk outdoors in all types of weather to other buildings or offices located on the campus. The Campus is located in an area that contains numerous hills and slopes and may not always be fully accessible for mobility impaired individuals.
