Department Background:

As a service and maintenance department of Cornell AgriTech, the responsibility of the Buildings and Properties Unit (B & P) is to provide responsive maintenance, engineering and special services in support of our institution's vital research. The mission is to maintain and expand the campus and its facilities to the highest possible standards, while providing dependable and cost effective support services to those carrying out the research. B & P is a service organization dedicated to the success and satisfaction of Cornell AgriTech's faculty, academics, staff, students and campus visitors.

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, support the Buildings and Properties mission in a multi-trade environment by working cooperatively with unit and research staff and faculty. Perform a full range of journey-level plumbing, welding, heating and sheet metal work including: Install, diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain steam, condensate, hydronic heating, domestic water, sanitary, storm, distilled water, deionized water, compressed air, vacuum, and natural gas systems and associated equipment for Cornell AgriTech; recommend repair or replacement strategies; read, interpret and communicate using blueprints, technical drawings and other relevant technical information as it pertains to maintaining, installing and troubleshooting facilities infrastructure and systems. Other job duties include:

  • Read and interpret shop and field drawings, piping schematics, riser diagrams and other project documents
  • Independently troubleshoot complex systems, plan and execute installations start to finish
  • Provide leadership and expertise on complex jobs in the field, help others develop skills and expertise
  • Identify necessary parts and supplies needed to complete a task and work with shop lead to plan and procure
  • Perform metal fabrication for repair work and research projects, including limited design work to solve specific problems
  • Assist other trades staff within the unit such as carpenters and electricians with a variety of tasks as needed
  • Assist in maintenance of heating systems, water systems, piping materials, and methods, welding and metal fabrications; some electrical work may be involved
  • Provide relief to Utility Plant Operators periodically as required; this relief may include working a non-standard work schedule such as evenings or nights.
  • Learn and follow safety and work environment regulations, policies and procedures (ARC flash prevention and protection, lead, asbestos, fall protection, confined space, crystalline silica etc.); attend required trainings; participate in Cornell's respirator use program
  • Assist with custodial, warehouse, utility plant, grounds, and other trade shops as required
  • Acquire and maintain licenses and/or special knowledge to maintain specialized equipment as required
  • Retrieve work order data from, and enter material, labor, and work log data into Maximo daily accurately and dependably
  • Maintain hand tools and diagnostic equipment needed to perform job duties
  • Respond to call backs outside standard shift hours to perform emergency work in cases where campus operations are subject to disruption

  • Must possess and maintain valid driver license and undergo successful driver background check and employment background check

Trade Specific (Plumbing)

  • More than 3 years commercial pipe fitting and welding work experience
  • Strong knowledge of plumbing trade and ability to read shop and field drawings
  • Must be able to inspect crawl spaces, attics, laboratories, ventilation equipment, mechanical rooms, mechanical shafts, sub basements and confined, isolated areas

Multi-Trade Technician III Specific

  • Must have expertise in one or more of the disciplines (plumbing, electric, carpentry/general construction, refrigeration, controls) with at least 5 to 7 years of experience
  • Ability to work independently to perform routine maintenance, repairs, and replacements
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot complex systems and plan installations start to finish; or, have a core competency in at least two disciplines and actively utilize skills in both disciplines
  • Operate and maintain trades equipment; strategically select most appropriate equipment to complete task; evaluate condition of equipment
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and building equipment/components; recommend repair or replacement strategies; read, interpret and communicate using blueprints, technical drawings and other relevant technical information as it pertains to maintaining, installing and troubleshooting facilities infrastructure and systems
  • Must be able to wear safety equipment such as a respirator
  • Maintain required knowledge of applicable safety and code compliance regulations and requirements
  • Respond to work orders and requests to perform maintenance activities
  • Identify necessary parts and supplies needed to complete a task and work with shop lead to develop plan or procure
  • Provide relief for Utility Plant operators and assist other trade shops
  • Support other functional groups as required to fulfill mission of organization

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Plumbing Trade School or Union certification
  • Experience as a plumber in a maintenance facility
  • Experience as a plumber in a maintenance facility
  • Training and/or experience with the carpentry, mechanical and electrical trades, as a mason, or as a vehicle mechanic
