Job Description

Primary Purpose:

Oversees the development and implementation of transition planning for students who receive special education service. Provides leadership and guidance to Special Education Staff. Oversee services and resources for students, parents, and staff in the areas of vocational education, transition planning, post-secondary education planning, military planning, employment skills development, and daily living skills.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Master's Degree in Special Education or Educational Administration from an accredited college or university - preferred
  • Valid Texas Special Education teaching certification
  • Valid Principal Certification or Mid-management certification - preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Expertise in the development and implementation of transition planning for students who receive special education services.
  • Working knowledge of state and federal laws and guidelines related to special education.
  • Expertise in training school staff.
  • Working knowledge of state monitoring systems.
  • Ability to work with teachers, administrators and parents to ensure compliance.
  • Knowledge of the Special Education Annual Review Dismissal (ARD) process
  • Knowledge of post-secondary and vocational opportunities
  • Excellent consultation, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with district staff and public
  • Strong training skills for working with adult staff members
  • Excellent professional development skills

Experience:

  • Three (3) years teaching experience in special education and/or vocational setting
  • Experience in coordinating and facilitating professional development
  • Supervisory experience preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Monitor and support teachers and ARD Facilitators in Transition duties.
  • Provide direct assistance and training to Teachers and Special Education Staff.
  • Act as the Transition and Employment Designee for Texans Can Academies.
  • Design, organize, and implement professional development for Special Education staff, district staff, and campus staff.
  • Support ARD facilitators and Special Ed Teachers to align transition goals and objectives in student Individual Educational Plans (IEP).
  • Stay abreast transition assessments and monitor implementation of career interests' inventories
  • Monitor transition plan development for students to ensure compliance.
  • Collaborate with college and career readiness staff to support transition.
  • Maintain effective working relationship with campuses, community members, local and state agencies, and stakeholder.
  • Support partnerships with businesses, industries, colleges and agencies that promote transition services at corporate and campus level.
  • Collaborate with other service providers in building employability skills for students. Network with local adult service providers and agencies to facilitate viable postsecondary support and services for students receiving special education services
  • Monitor implementation of School Health and Related Services (SHARS).
  • Stay abreast of and comply with federal and state rules and regulations.
  • Coordinate and complete and State Performance Plan (SPP) Indicators.
  • Dissemination of information to parents and adult students about Transition Services available in the community.
  • Coordinate compliance with FERPA, HIPPA, Child Abuse, Suicide and SB179 (David's Law).
  • Collaborate with special education staff to ensure compliance with special education programs and audit files.
  • Participate in professional development to stay abreast of best practices in transition services.
  • Maintain high professionalism in execution of duties and responsibilities.
  • Facilitate compliance with local, state, and federal policies and regulations regarding special education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Communication

  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use effective expressive and written communication skills to present information accurately and clear.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be able to drive and have reliable transportation available during working hours in order to go to assigned work locations.
  • Districtwide Travel Required
  • Extended stay at times

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment. May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities; physical restraint if students are in danger of hurting themselves or others; and assist non-ambulatory students. Exposure to biological hazards.
